Every four years we have a leap year and we add our thirteenth moon called Pagume. Our new years fall on our passover on full moon of our moons Megebe/Miyaziya [March /April gregorian] we do not follow the Gregorian calendar.

Our day is made up of 12 hours and our night is also made up of 12 hours. Every seventh day of the week is called the እሑድ sanbat and its the day of rest. No work on the እሑድ Sanbat.

We spot our new moons by the naked eye and a new moon sighting report is sent to the Royal Court for authorization by His Majesty the king. Once authorized, the new moon is officially declared and celebrated.

The first light of the next day is counted as our day one called እሑድ Ehud. The counting of the days begin.

The moon usually has a duration of either 29 days or 30 days. No more ! no less!

Our lunar days are reliable and we use them to determine times for our feasts, holy days, fasts, celebrations etc..
